Could there be a greater topic to discuss? Could there be a greater time to discuss it? Our society’s mental health is in a state of crisis. The numbers are staggering. In 2021, 42% of high school students “experienced persistent feelings of sadness of hopelessness.” And 22% “seriously considered attempting suicide. The health of adults is gloomy as well. In 2021 two in five American adults reported symptoms of anxiety and depression.[1] The implications of our mental struggles are enormous. People with depression are 40% more likely to have cardiovascular issues. Of those who struggle with mental health, one third experience substance abuse. Students with mental concerns are three times as likely to repeat a grade and twice as likely to drop out of school.[2] This research creates a consistent headline: our minds matter.
